Teacher (Licensed)

Job Type: Part-Time
Compensation: $18 to $21 Hourly
Program Locations: Windsor Terrace, East New York, Spring Creek, Brownsville & Canarsie
Program Overview:

COMPASS NYC - IACRL program mission is to empower its youth, in part by supporting those skills and lessons learned during regular school hours, and in part by supplementing those areas of development not regularly provided during the school day. Especially, we seek to engage our youth in interactive, project-based learning that utilizes new and existing educational models to stimulate interests, build self-esteem, and encourage self-reliance and independent thinking. Our education initiatives furthermore center on creating enjoyable activities within safe and nurturing environments, with a focus toward positive youth development.

  • Ensure the safety and engagement of children in assigned activities

  • Plan, organize and implement Common Core based instruction, that is fun and engaging, in an optimal learning environment 

  • Facilitate purposeful activities that foster development of new skills in children, while reinforcing skills/information previously taught

  • Assist in all activities needed for the orderly operation of the program, inclusive of : supervising children during snack/supper, facilitating dismissal, conducting field trips, hosting special events, etc.,

  • Work with Youth Workers, engaging them in the lesson plan development process and modeling activity facilitation to help Youth Workers develop professionally

  • Assist in all activities to ensure the orderly operation of the program, inclusive of : completing daily administrative paperwork (e.g., keeping attendance, time sheets, etc.,)

  • Demonstrate key competencies including : initiative, teamwork, cooperation, preparedness, professionalism, reliability and a willingness to continuously improve

  • Liaise with parents, Youth Workers & Group Leaders to ensure the safety and engagement of children assigned to you

  • Attend all meetings, training workshops, and special events, as required, inclusive of those outside of program hours


  • Bachelor's Degree or higher from an accredited institution

  • Valid New York State Teaching Certificate/License

  • Minimum of three years experience working with elementary or middle school-aged children (in-school/out-of-school settings)

  • Exceptional group management , problem-solving and conflict resolution skills

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Competency in youth development and child care

  • Demonstrate the ability to engage, motivate and effectively work to create interactive academic and/or enrichment activities that are age-appropriate

  • Ability to work as part of a team within a school community

  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and respectfully with a broad range of diverse constituents

Note: All COMPASS/SONYC positions require Fingerprint, SCR and Medical clearances to work with children. COVID19 Vaccine required for all school based staff.
